Welcome to Matt Bedell Counseling and Consulting, PLLC! I am a Licensed Professional Counselor - Supervisor in Texas, providing therapy services to individuals ages 14+ for anxiety/depression, life transitions, substance abuse, suicidal/self-harm thoughts/behaviors, social anxiety, and athletes of all levels.
I am a Doctoral Candidate for the Doctor of Psychology degree, where I’m currently studying the relationship between social anxiety and avoidance to improve treatment engagement and attendance. I also have a Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Currently. I earned two Bachelor's degrees in History and Psychology while playing baseball for Clarke University.
In addition, I carry two licenses in the state of Texas to practice psychotherapy. My second license is as a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor, which includes training in addiction therapy and working closely with other LCDCs to refine my knowledge of supporting individuals struggling with addictions.
I am also an Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Trained Therapist.
Experience
My clinical experience began as a caseworker in community mental health, providing brief counseling interventions and case management services to underserved populations. I worked with individuals that were hospitalized in a psychiatric facility at least three times within 365 days. That experience helped me grasp, at a deep level, how to treat suffering.
After that position, I began working at an Advocacy Center treating victims of violent crime and people overcoming domestic violence. That position taught me how to help people regain a sense of security and safety and restore confidence in their abilities.
Before private practice, I worked in a hospital setting serving adolescents. While working at a higher level of care, I gained invaluable hours of treatment experience understanding the unique challenges adolescents face today and fostering improved communication between teens, parents, and their families.
Why counseling?
A college coach encouraged leadership and challenged me to "be the change you wish you had" regarding the team's culture. After that comment, my life shifted, and a drive to help others ignited. My psychology advisor showed me a path to helping others beyond athletics. He gave examples of his counseling career before becoming a professor throughout classes.
The same work ethic that helped me play baseball in college transitioned to a passion for learning about psychology. In time I learned how to create an internal belief, growth mindset, and healing for other people to extend beyond themselves positively.
When working together, I join you in your journey to finding wellness and hope to inspire an internal belief that you are worthy of the changes ahead. Life does not have to be meaningless or painful; it also requires effort to build a life in which you feel confident and proud. I use personal experiences in life, personal counseling, and clinical experiences of helping others in our sessions, all in pursuit of increasing the value and quality of life. Finding your worth begins with ownership of your part. Are you ready for the work ahead?
I love this image because it conveys so much with so little. Books to reflect knowledge and experience, a light above the books and next to signs to signal awareness for thinking styles, and a walkway that extends into a beautiful future of possibilities. What is your image to how you navigate life?
